The top 5 killer diseases in the country are the same co-morbidities that increases risk for COVID-19 fatality.
The implications of these conditions are well known, but we have been made aware of their potential severity in the context of COVID-19. The newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control found that patients with certain underlying conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer were six times more likely to be hospitalized for, and 12 times more likely to die of, COVID-19.
Chronic disease is a identified as leading, often preventable, cause of premature death worldwide, and research has shown that a person’s life expectancy decreases with each additional chronic condition. There are several modifiable factors that contribute to these conditions, but weight, diet and exercise have been widely proven to substantially lower a person’s risk, and preventive care plays a critical role in early detection and prevention, but often neglected in clinical and hospital-based care.
While this is by no means new information, we are clearly facing a double burden disease with COVID-19 affront and noncommunicable disease on the background. This is the time to be a sobering nudge to take lifestyle intervention more seriously. A wake-up call for all health care providers. There is a tangible solution to decrease COVID-19 and NCD mortality.
